Days Gone Photo Challenge – The Long and Winding Road

Days Gone Photo Challenge – The Long and Winding Road

[Music] hello and welcome this is photographer gamer and today I will be reviewing the days gone photo challenge which I set up basically the challenge is called the long and winding road so people had a week to create an image that accurately reflected that theme in whatever way they chose now these these ones didn’t make it this was by clear g88 Ron I think that is on Twitter nice action short of an animal kind of having a go afreeca but in terms of the long and winding road it didn’t really capture that you don’t have the road like the road trip element you don’t have beacon so this one’s by day’s gonna I like the kind of the long shadow it looks very surreal cuz it almost looks like a contorted animal if you look at it closely for me I think it’s the coloration like when I this image really does snap out at you and you look at it very vibrant very pop art it jebra it’s very snappy and really nice and vibrant and I really like it in that respect but in terms of actually being a companion to the theme it kind of maybe detracts from that in that respect that’s why this one just didn’t make the top 5 this is from DJ Tahoe nice with a Rickie and Deacon there it’s a nice kind of subtle shot but it doesn’t quite have the punch this is by DJ Tahoe again now this one I really liked this one I think the only thing missing here having some kind of character in this space would be really nice because then you’d have the this character here another one here in it would be nice context I like the use of perspective I like the use of scale where it creates the scale of this large lumberjack with it gets pancakes like that I remember this part of the map so I really liked the image I just feel like there’s something missing which means it didn’t quite make a cup this one is by fitting a door I hope I’ve pronounced that correctly this is a nice shot again with this one I think with the framing it feels a little bit claustrophobic it feels quite narrow but you know it’s edited nicely it’s nice and clean and smooth but it for me it’s the framing and the composition it feels just a little bit too squashed this one is by photo mode addict I really like the image you know I like the fact that deacons there with the bike there’s the saluted car winding Street toward the tunnel which really is a good representation of the unknown where deacons going the long and winding road and where it leads who knows so like as an actual image I really like it for me it’s the color toning you know color toning is a very subtle mistress you know it’s very delicate you have to look at what other colors really saying are they really accentuating the image or is it just it’s it’s a really nice framing really nice composition just lets just feel like the color grading color toning was a little heavy but it was it was a close call to make the top 5 so what else we’ve got here this was another one by photo mode addict nice nicely cleanly done good composition really nice detail just lacks something to kind of give it a little more resonance here’s one by sim underscore Nell this is similar to the one by fed in a door in that it feels like it let’s put them next to each other they’re both nice images it just feels like composition and framing it’s about a balance is about finding the configuration so everything feels like it’s in a natural place and here it just it’s something of like the idea is right the color and everything is right it just feels that the perspective is not quite right it doesn’t quite give you the absolute maximum from the image but it’s still a very nice image okay this one strap underscore 4k C I really like this shot if this was landscapes this would be probably a top fiber but for the long and winding road hmm it doesn’t really tell me that story this is a great shot for wildlife like no wildlife nature and the last two if you Viking dad to 7/8 he does a really nice blog on days gone you should also check him out both of the images by biking dead almost made the top 5 see what I would say about Viking dad just in-game photography he’s got the right idea he’s got the eye for it he’s got the kind of natural inclination to capture the image like within both of the images he’s done there’s there’s a great image in there but what I would say is it’s the framing so I’m just going to go into this one quickly okay so here’s the image we were looking at now what I would say is just for representation composition and framing it’s about punchiness it’s about not wasting like you don’t want too much dead space now if I look at this image and I look at this area here right here for me it doesn’t feel like this this is this is adding nothing to the shot if we cropped this for example just as an example and and we move it something like that just as an example let’s see what it looks like see now like I said that within that big image this is a great image right here because you’ve got really nice leading lines up into this the sunset you’ve got the screamer as a silhouette got the bike it’s really nice color work you know not too heavy on that warm warmth of it it’s really treated nicely it definitely would have made the top 5 but like what I would say is for Viking that just as a piece of like them tips for the future think about what’s the key part of the image that you’re trying to express but like I said I really like it and this one’s the same it’s kind of like this whole part here in the middle beautiful beautiful beautiful shot like I said both of Viking deads images are really nice there’s images within the images and it’s what I would say it’s like it’s a case of repetition and doing it over and over again and they’ll kind of get more on point but all of those images had some nice qualities unfortunately none of them made the top 5 okay so these are the top 5 now they’re not in chronological order they’re just random order so let’s go through them one by one okay we’re sure we’ll start at the end so this one’s by Stratfor now this one you’ve got the sunset there’s no long shadows or nature so that the only bonus points for the sunset I like the fact that it’s got a long winding pathway and it leads kind of you don’t see beyond that but it’s nice he’s got nice light on the bike on the smoke the color management’s good a little bit of blue tint in the shadows and I saw warmth in the horizon with the Sun coming down what we got here this is by sim underscore now this I really like clean smooth good use of focus the color is subtle the mist and the trees and the kind of sun set camera roll gives it a good quality whatever we got the next one samy underscore ATAR know this is a very warm image this is very sort of heartwarming emotive representing kind of the early stages of the journey yeah you’ve got deacon and his girlfriend at the time they were on the road they’re at a crossroads there’s sunset coming in from the left a little bit of shadow nice color framing solid this one’s by fitting a door really nice use of purple purple is a difficult color to do split toning with because if you go too harsh with it it can look a little bit intense and pop art style like almost like a move lavender color with the rain with the light of the bike on the road it’s a very nice shot and then the last of the five are by clear g88 run now this one’s really this really stands out because it’s the silhouetted element it doesn’t have natural shadows necessarily there is a sunset but it has artificial shadows like these areas here these are basically silhouettes and it’s a silhouette reflected in the water so obviously the light source comes from there here’s deacon and then we see with the kind of false shadow of it in the water so very bleak the color is nicely managed it’s very softly done like not over-the-top so now decisions decisions are Jesus this can be difficult all of these images are very nice okay at number five we have this image by fitting a door now clean good framing very nice image definitely a top five I didn’t quite have the extra little thing to put it into the top three or four at number 4 we have strap for K now really moody really atmospheric good lighting good color management good leading line into the frame and the composition good representation of the long and winding road at number three we have sim underscore Nell again I really like this image it’s very sort of serene you have the mist and the smokiness the kind of muted coloration you have the focus point on Deacon good use of focal depth you know the focus is on the bike but there’s a lot out of focus so it kind of creates that kind of dreaminess of being on the open road and like losing yourself in that journey good sunset action that’s a really nice shot very well done the final two it’s between clear g88 run and semi underscore attano so we have the two images are on the Left we have the very bleak apocalyptic kind of Death a landscape with the really creative use of reflections with this you know the false shadows the bright light in the distance like leading up over the hill really clever image really bleak and quite surreal and disturbing of like the future an image on the right is by Sammy attano complete polar opposite really good composition really good warmth emotional kind of uplifting both these images I like they’re kind of like a before and after it’s actually kind of a nice story between the two images okay so if we look at them both on the screen really what we’re looking at is two images that have the same level of quality in my opinion these two there’s a lot of good images this this challenge but these two just stood out for me and the left is more bleak the right is more kind of uplifting and positive composition it’s quite a tight I can’t split them in terms of how they feel they both have the same resonance let’s look at the bonus criteria so they’re both at sunset the one on the Left uses sunset as a directional light to create the silhouettes the one on the right uses the sunset to have like a nice warm glow as you can see it’s like a left-to-right sunset no nature in them as in wildlife sand no bonus points for those long shadows the right has some but they’re not like there’s more like chunks of light I think on the left that one has like the full shadows they’re not real shadows but the silhouette so personally I think as an image that’s striking an image that just gets your attention it really makes you kind of feel something I think something kind of the one on the left I think the image by clear g88 Ron just about edges it I do love both of the images though I don’t know I think that the thing that separates the two is the creative use of that water element using water as a reflection is a really really cool way of creating some like an alternative dimension in an image for me that is just a little just a little extra tick that just splits them because they’re both excellent images and they both stand out so so that is the winner congratulations that was the first photo challenge four days gone I hope you enjoyed entering thank you thank you to everybody who entered really good quality I hope my breakdown of the images was had some useful information in there I hope like maybe some of the tips will help you improve some elements of your work that’s the winner a very nice atmospheric apocalyptic moody surreal image that creates a kind of a nice duality with the reflection with the false shadows creating that silhouette in the water good sunrise or sunset nice framing good composition little vignettes around the edges color worth is good okay that was the days gone photo challenge round up for challenge number one the long and winding road thanks for watching please like and subscribe retweet share have a great day everyone I’ll speak to you next time Cheers [Music]
